Community Respite Service Inc. seeks supportive, empathetic, motivated, and reliable Respite Workers to join our team!

About The Job

Respite Workers provide respite in the Participants home or by taking the Participant to activities in the community.

Duties may include (but are not limited to): personal care (feeding, transferring, dressing, bathing, changing, toileting) assisting with life skills (cooking, cleaning, shopping), engaging in recreational activities both in the home and in the community.

What are we looking for?

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Vector Search)
  • Child Abuse Registry Check
  • Adult Abuse Registry Check

Completed within the last 3 months. (The cost of the required 3 checks will be reimbursed after the completion of 500 hours with CRS.)

  • Proficient English Skills (oral and written)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle (Winnipeg has an opportunity for some bussers)
  • Post-secondary education or previous experience
  • Due to working with a population that have vulnerable health conditions, the applicant must provide proof of COVID19 vaccination.

Wage: $17.25 $19.25 (starting wage dependent on education and experience)

  • Education in Disability and Community Support Program
  • Employment as an Educational Assistant, Social Services Worker, Child Care Worker, Direct Support Worker (residential & day service), Health Care Aide or related field
  • Working, volunteering or personal experience with people with disabilities
  • Experience providing personal care (Bathing, Changing, Dressing, Feeding, Lifting etc.)
  • Experience with aggressive behaviors

Interviews: will be conducted at mutually convenient times. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Interviews do not take place until all checks are completed.

Respite Worker Job Description

Six key areas of responsibility:

  • Enable personal choice and treating Participants with dignity and respect, provide a caring approach to Participant needs (emotional, physical)
  • Follow the instructions given by the office, family, and Participants unless there is a safety issue.
  • Be aware of Participant’s health and safety in the home and or in the community and help as needed (First Aid/CPR, alerting family, 911)
  • Provide personal care that may be required like feeding, dressing, toileting, bathing, lifting, transferring, and administering and recording authorized medication as needed
  • Prepare meals during the respite period and do light housekeeping as needed (based on the Participant’s need)
  • Care for a maximum of three siblings during respite, under 12 years old, when this can be done safely
  • Arrive at scheduled shifts and be on time
  • In Winnipeg, arrive 15 minutes before shift when meeting new Participant for the first time or for the scheduled meeting ahead of time
  • In Westman, arrange a family meeting the week prior to your initial shift.
  • Fulfill agreement on declaration of availability and give two weeks notice for changes (Office Administered)
  • Confirm with Participants/families and confirm schedule with office
  • Have Participant File and the Medical Consent form while providing respite and follow instructions in the Participant File.
  • Clean up after the respite so you leave the property of the Participant/family in the same condition that you found it
  • Can work in Participant home, in the community and with a variety of Participants, within a variety of time frames
  • Can work with children, youth, and adults with physical and intellectual challenges (both in challenging and non-challenging situations)
  • Be flexible around scheduling changes /can pick up shifts on short notice when possible
  • Be flexible to work in all areas of Winnipeg or assigned Westman areas
  • Understand and puts into practice CRS policies and procedures and follow Workplace Health and Safety plan including the Working Alone plan
  • Understand and maintain confidentiality of Participants/families
  • Be able to work independently and make decisions in difficult situations
  • Respect family lifestyle and choices
  • Do not impose personal judgments and expectations on Participants/families
  • Maintain positive professional boundaries
  • Report all forms of abuse, neglect, and suspected abuse to office immediately
  • Have accurate documentation filled out and handed in bi-weekly
  • Attend training and regular staff meetings (Office Administered)
  • Report all injuries / incidents to yourself, Participants, and siblings within 24 hours
  • Respond to office enquiries quickly and keep the office informed of occurrences on respites on the Respite Report forms
  • Assist with and participate in activities and special interests that the Participant requests that are safe and legal
  • Do activity planning with the Participant and family
  • Communicate with Participant and family regarding the activities and cost
  • Ensure respites stay within allowable expenses
  • Build positive relationships with the Participant and family
